Established in 1954, the ADI Compasso d'Oro Award is the oldest and the most influential worldwide design award. Born from the idea of Gio Ponti, it was held for years by the department store la Rinascente to highlight the value and quality of Italian-designed products at the time of its inception. The Award was assigned later to the ADI, which since 1958 has been taking care of the organization while overseeing its impartiality and integrity.
The more than 350 projects awarded in over sixty years, with almost two thousand selected with the Honorable Mention, are collected and preserved in the Compasso d'Oro ADI Award Historical Collection, managed by the ADI Foundation.
The Compasso d'Oro award is assigned based on a pre-selection carried out by the ADI Permanent Observatory of Design, a commission of experts, designers, critics, historians, journalists, members of the ADI or outside it, constantly engaged in evaluating and selecting the best representatives of Italian design in the world.
