Red Dot Design Award 2021
Alias wins Red Dot Design Award 2021 with Atelier oï e la nave va sofa
We are delighted to announce that Alias has won the Red Dot Design Award for the fourth time with the e la nave va sofa designed by Atelier Oï, affirming once more its key role in Made in Italy excellence. The sofa was chosen by an international panel of designers, lecturers, experts and journalists for its high-quality design and will be the main feature of a virtual exhibition during the Red Dot Design Week from 21 to 25 June. E la nave va is officially part of the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, which has collected award-winning objects since 1955, and from 21 June 2022 to 31 May 2022 it will be on display as part of presentations at the "Design on Stage" and "Milestones in Contemporary Design" exhibitions. "It is with great pleasure that we receive the Red Dot Design Award, a contemporary award in its capacity to popularise the culture of design
and innovation applied to the project.
To be perfectly honest, I believe the work carried out at the hands of Alias and Atelier Oï resulting in the ‘e la nave va’ project is fully deserving of this prestigious recognition. This extraordinary upholstered piece of furniture inverts the paradigms of traditional sofa architecture, exploiting the structure’s elasticity to guarantee comfort and ergonomics. It represents the culmination of a line of research that reflects Atelier Oï's constructivist approach, consistent with Alias’ DNA.”
The structure of the sofa uses a system of visible slats inspired from the construction of wooden boat hulls: elastic ribs support the cushions and are secured to two wooden rails suspended on stylish aluminium feet.Components in curved multilayer ash and oak wood, arranged in alternation, define
the structure and the visual appearance of the project, giving life to a lightweight structure with a great personality.
This space accommodates a large, soft cushion, which envelops the guests in a generous embrace. “e la nave va” is a vibrant project, which interacts with those who use it in a marvellous balance between formal elegance and ergonomics.
Shapes are reduced to their very essence, putting the accent on the materials, which take on great stylistic significance.
The construction principle of “e la nave va”, based on the multiplication of an element, finds expression in a graphic design which is concretised in a sofa and an armchair.
E la nave va receives one of the world's major, leading design awards for its design quality.
An award that aims to honour the exceptional
quality of project engineers and manufacturers, who have been eligible for the RED DOT DESIGN AWARD since 1955 and appear in the Red Dot museum in Zollverein, Essen.
