Alias recounts the encounter between creativity and technological research at the dopomilano in Oslo
6 June 2019
The excellence of Italian design branded ALIAS will be spotlighted in Oslo during Kontorrama / DOPOMILANO, the event scheduled to open on 6 June dedicated to the latest home furnishing trendspresented at the Salone del Mobile in Milano. Creative flair and technological research, ever salient characteristics of the design experience of the company founded in 1979 are recounted through a unique and extraordinary piece of furniture: “e la nave va”, the sofa designed by Atelier Oï.
Inside a former industrial building dating back to the late 1800’s, which hosts the fascinating premises of the Kontorrama showroom, a longstanding partner of Alias on the Scandinavian market, the brand presents the design project with a sophisticated display concept: a pared-down installation which reveals the Alias DNA and its constructivist approach as faithfully interpreted by Atelier Oï.
Presented here in its three-seater configuration, the “e la nave va” sofa is positioned at the centre of the room, as if it were a piece of sculpture, to enable visitors to observe it from all angles. Against this still, silent and timeless scenario, which seems to be borrowed from metaphysical art, images of the sofa float in mid-air: photo sets, close-ups, sketches and preparatory drawings are framed in fine wood mouldings to capture the moments of inspiration and the design experience behind the creation of this product.
“e la nave va” is a sofa inspired by the meticulous work of the expert marine carpenters who have employed their skills for centuries in the construction of wood boats. Visible slats in curved multilayer ash and oak wood, arranged in alternation, recall the structure of a boat and define, the visual appearance of the project, giving life to a lightweight structure with a great personality.
This element accommodates a large, soft cushion, which envelops the guests in a generous embrace: the textile belt that keeps the structure together distributes the loads evenly and in doing so enables the sofa to adapt perfectly to a person’s body, for enhanced elasticity and optimal sturdiness.
“e la nave va”is a vibrant project, which interacts with those who use it in a marvellous balance between formal elegance and ergonomics. Shapes are reduced to their very essence, putting the accent on the materials, which take on great stylistic significance. Form and function form a perfect union to become the main elements of the project: thanks to this philosophy, Alias offers designers a rich heritage of know-how in terms of product engineering applied to furniture, while launching an extraordinary challenge to creative thinking.
