The laleggera chair by Riccardo Blumer selected for the Italia Geniale exhibition. From 7 to 22 November 2021 at the Italian Pavilion – Expo Dubai
At the Italian Pavilion of Expo Dubai opens, on the occasion of Dubai Design Week, the exhibition ITALIA GENIALE. Design enables, Beauty, Originality, Creativity of the industrial design that is universally appreciated. An exhibition realized by ADI and ADI Design Museum for the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Commissioner’s Office for Expo 2020 Dubai, in collaboration with UIBM Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi, Unioncamere and ITA/ ICE Italian Trade Agency.
The “Italia Geniale” exhibition seeks to highlight the inventive capacity and design skills of Made in Italy. It is a detailed manifesto of Italian industrial design, offering, with the works of Italian ingenuity, a journey through the evolution and characteristics of the most creative products, which demonstrate how to create, stimulate and guide innovation in order to devote oneself to it: from the ’60s to the present day, it presents not only objects that have become global icons of design and have had a profound effect on daily life, but also the newest and most innovative goods and the most avant-garde technological research. In a word, Made in Italy. The “Italia Geniale” project brings together a thought-out selection of historical and contemporary products that are considered emblematic of the values of quality, research, innovation and iconic status. The story of the national design and production “genius” is organised into 5 thematic areas: imaginable, workable, relationable, liveable and moveable.
A choral and heterogeneous journey that represents in 100 products, belonging to different product categories, the ability of good design to “enable”, that is, to allow the conditions of inclusiveness, freedom, facilitation, sustainability, equity and dignity, focusing clearly on the evolution of human needs. A “Person oriented design” capable of strategically combining beauty, creativity and positive values that define Italy’s entrepreneurial, commercial and cultural identity.
The professors Carlo Martino and Francesco Zurlo, curators of “Italia Geniale” have selected the laleggera chair, Compasso d’Oro 1998, designed by Riccado Blumer for Alias.Laleggera chair, the highest expression of technology applied to design, is a stackable seat that is the result of the combination of a solid traditional material, solid wood, and the more contemporary and lightweight expanded polyurethane with which the structure is filled. The external shell in glued wood veneers or multilaminate wood veneers is finished with a transparent varnish or lacquer in various colours. The chair can be interpreted as a reinterpretation of the modernist motto “fidelity to materials”. Without openly proclaiming the technique with which it is made or attempting to camouflage it, the laleggera chair suggests comfort by combining the old and the new, without forcing the user to consciously experience it. An icon of Made in Italy that demonstrates that the quality of the project goes beyond the design and its form, and that it involves materials, production technologies and technical solutions in a profound and complex way.
