Designed by Studio Prohar under the guidance of architect Davor Mateković, this private home reinterprets the typical building tradition and features of the local heritage.
Standing on the green slopes close to Kumrovec - Croatia – the pre-existing shape of the house has been preserved while the portico has been replaced with a glass cube which extends beyond the main volume of the house and also acts as an entrance area. This organic cottage breathes and changes according to the weather conditions, thus creating a direct link with its natural surrounds.
Widely considered to be an archaic material that has fallen into disuse, straw has been used innovatively on both the roofs and walls, combined with a wood bearing structure and a cubic structure in aluminium, which makes this house a tribute to the rich culture and heritage of the Zagorje region.
Comfortable taormina armchairs by Alfredo Haeberli have been chosen to furnish the light-filled living room with a splash of colour.
